Ethnicity pay gap

The Government is consulting employers over plans to introduce new ethnicity pay reporting rules.

The move follows a speech by Theresa May acknowledging that some people ‘feel like they are hitting a brick wall’ at work because of their ethnicity.

The government's Race Disparity Audit last year showed widely varying outcomes in areas including education, employment, health and criminal justice between Britain's white and ethnic minority populations.

It found that Asian, black and other ethnic groups were disproportionately likely to be on a low income.

Key questions in this consultation:

  • what ethnicity pay information should be reported by employers to allow for meaningful action
  • who should be expected to report (i.e. the size of organisation)
  • next steps
