The Big Picture - Beach Art

Children at St Thomas’ Nursery and Beach School have created a replica lifeboat out of rubbish found during their weekly beach-cleaning sessions at Lytham St Annes on the Fylde coast of Lancashire.

The work was created with resident artist John Morrow to highlight the pollution and plastic problem affecting beaches and coastlines.

The nursery donated the artwork to the local lifeboat station, where it was displayed until the end of the summer.

Nursery supervisor Anne Swindlehurst said, ‘We start every beach school session with a beach clean to make the children aware of rubbish and the effect it is having.

‘We are very proud of our creation and the message it delivers, as well as raising awareness of our local lifeboat, which we also learn about extensively when addressing beach safety.’
