Knows nanny best

The Professional Association of Nursery Nurses wants to point out that PANN is the only trade union for nannies in the UK. Professional officer Tricia Pritchard says, 'We are extremely frustrated by the current move to persuade nannies to become "home childcarers" or registered childminders in order to gain limited recognition. A nanny is a professional in her own right. Childminders now get the recognition they deserve, and nursery nurses and classroom support staff can be encouraged that strides are being taken to recognise their roles within a school staff team. Why is it, then, that when it comes to nannies there is a move to either refuse to recognise them or to turn them into something they are not before we accept them as fellow professionals? 'PANN calls on all childcarers to support their nanny colleagues as nanny colleagues. Nannies are not a threat to childminders or nursery nurses.

They are another option of childcare for parents.'
