Where could a teaching degree lead a candidate with widely varied working experience who wants to keep specialising in the early years? Tina Jefferies suggests three career possibilities and the earnings to expect

Experience

I started off as a children's nanny and ran a holiday nursery attached to a hotel. I worked as a classroom assistant at two local primary schools while bringing up my own three children.

I prefer working in the early years and have more expertise and experience in that area, so I decided to go for a permanent position in a local village pre-school. For the past three years I have worked as a pre-school deputy, moving up to supervisor.

What I do

Key areas of my job involve:

- Ongoing planning and evaluation of children's development and learning

- Deploying staff

- Developing and sustaining relationships with parents
