Settings should use photos of children on social media, says Nicola Read

Photographs of the children in your setting are a great marketing tool. They allow potential families to see the kind of activities available. They also get to see what their own children are up to if they attend your setting.

But often nurseries are wary of using pictures of children in social media posts; many aren’t sure if they should or shouldn’t so refrain to be on the safe side. However, if you can, you should. Here’s what you need in place and why they are important.

Your nursery should have a social media policy that all staff have read and understand. It should detail which photographs are allowed to be used online and under what circumstances. In addition to this, there should be a section on children’s registration forms that expressly asks for permission for you to use the child’s photograph in marketing. This often offers choices between printed marketing materials, the setting’s own website and social media pages.

If you don’t get permission then it goes without saying that sharing pictures of that child is a complete no. But if parents or guardians agree to the use of them on social media then you are good to go.

Remember, many families love seeing their children represent the setting and they are usually really proud to share the images with family and friends – which helps your reach and engagement figures!
