Nursery Management: Editor's view

While children's minister Sarah Teather continues to reassure the early years sector that it is still a priority, there are fears that lack of ring-fencing around vital money-streams will inevitably have an impact on the quality of provision.

Take training. With the Graduate Leader Fund being absorbed into the Early Intervention Grant, there are doubts about where EYP Status goes from here. Is workforce development in danger of stalling? Another pressing issue is sustainability under the 15-hour entitlement. Nurseries are adapting well to the practicalities of delivering flexibly. However, National Day Nurseries Association research highlights that on average providers are losing 98 pence per child an hour on current funding levels.

These are some of the hot topics under scrutiny in this issue of Nursery Management. We talk to managers of strong performing nurseries to find out how they are succeeding in the current market. In our 'people' feature four individuals, 'new at the top', explain how they are tackling the challenges of their roles. Despite their different remits, all emphasise the importance of being passionate ambassadors for early years.

This passion can also be communicated through a company website. Ways to create a site that can work for your business are explored. And with the winter drawing to an end check out our feature on canopies and shades and discover which styles will best enhance your outdoor area.

As well as having a practical use these fixtures can make a visual statement. Be bold and have your logo emblazoned on a shade.
