Using books to support themes

Early years practitioners know that it is important to build up a book collection that will engage young children and will help them to develop positive attitudes of themselves as 'readers'. This is the final article in a six- part series which has considered developing a book collection to support ever-popular early years themes:

* Things that go (transport)

* Families and babies

* All creatures great and small (animals and mini-beasts)

* Plants, trees and growing

* The local environment - buildings and people

* Dinosaurs and monsters.

Dinosaurs and monsters Practitioners often plan themes around dinosaurs and monsters simply because they hold such a fascination for young children. Wherever possible, topics should indeed be based on children's interests, learning needs and play themes. Yet projects about dinosaurs or monsters offer many challenges to early years practitioners.
