The Big Picture - By design

The £1.5million Northumbria University Nursery building has
won the 2013 Lord Mayor's Design Award in the Small Scale Development
category. The bi-annual awards focus on excellence in architecture and
environmental design.

The building, which opened in 2012, incorporates several environmentally-friendly features. The roof is planted with sedum to encourage wildlife and is fitted with photovoltaic cells to reduce energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Lord Mayor's Design Award judges commended the layout and sustainability of the building. This accolade follows the success of the Northumbria University Nursery team at the Nursery World Awards in October 2013, where they came top for Business Development.
