A nursery based at the National Day Nurseries Association's 1.2m flagship regional centre in the East Midlands has been rated 'inadequate'

by Ofsted following an inspection last November.

Trent Road Nursery, which has 92 childcare places, was judged 'good' in its last inspection less than a year ago in February 2005.

NDNA chief executive Purnima Tanuku confirmed the inspection result but said that the NDNA would be making an official complaint to Ofsted.

She said, 'We are bitterly disappointed with the result of the inspection; we don't believe it gives an accurate picture of the nursery. This, however, does not excuse the result, and we are doing everything we can to meet the requirements set out in the report.

'An action plan to tackle the points raised by Ofsted is already in place and the nursery staff are working hard to provide the highest quality of care. It should be noted that the Ofsted team did commend the nursery in a number of areas.'

The inspection report has not yet been posted on the Ofsted website, and an NDNA spokeswoman said she was unable to give further details until parents had been briefed.

Parents were due to attend a meeting on Monday night - as Nursery World went to press - where the results of the report and details of the action plan would be explained to them.

Ms Tanuku added, 'We have since commissioned an independent assessment of the nursery and we are working closely with the local authority, who are giving us additional support. We would like to reassure our members that everything is being done to rectify this situation and that NDNA is as committed as ever to promoting quality in early years.'

The East Midlands regional centre, which opened in May 2004, is one of five centres opened in the first phase of the NDNA's regional development strategy. Other centres are in the north-east, north-west, the West Midlands and London.
