* Water * plain flour * sugar * salt * saucepan * poster paints * paper bowls
* collage materials
Step by step
* Prepare an alternative form of paint for the children to use by mixing together five cups of water, two cups of plain flour, half a cup of sugar and three tablespoons of salt. Pour the mixture into a saucepan and cook for about seven minutes over a medium heat until the mixture is thick and bubbling.
* Allow the mixture to cool. This mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.
* Invite the children to add coloured poster paint to the cooled mixture and apply a layer of this to the outside of paper bowls, the upper part of an egg box or any other appropriately shaped cardboard containers.
* The children can then decorate their bowls by sticking collage materials to the damp mixture, such as sequins, buttons, pebbles or feathers.
* When the paint mixture dries the collage materials will stick firmly to it.
* Finish off the bowls by painting the inside of them with ordinary poster paints.
