New training programme aims to combat early years recruitment crisis

A training programme to support those who are unemployed to gain the skills and qualifications to work in the childcare sector and find employment has been launched with funding from the Mayor of London.

Backed by the Mayor and the European Social Fund, the Pan London Early Years Sector Skills (PLEYSS) training programme is being delivered by Professional Training Solutions – a provider of employability, apprenticeship courses and training across London, Surrey and the South-East.

Open to young people and adults aged 16 and upwards who are unemployed and living in London, the training programme offers two different routes, one for those wishing to become childminders or nannies, and the other for those looking to work in nurseries.

Upon completion of the course, learners will have a recognised qualification and be guaranteed an interview at the end of their training and six months mentoring.

The aim of the PLEYSS programme is to provide more employment opportunities in the Capital and diversify the early years workforce.

Joanne McCartney, deputy mayor for education and childcare, said, ‘High-quality early years provision is crucial to providing children with the best start in life.

However, we know the sector is suffering from a significant skills shortage and that many vacancies in settings are going unfilled. That’s why I’m pleased that City Hall has partnered with the European Social Fund to invest in the Pan London Early Years Sector Skills training programme. This important initiative will help attract new practitioners and provide them with the key skills and qualifications needed for a rewarding career working with young children.’
