Knowing when to start potty training and how to go about it can be daunting for parents so ERIC, the children’s bowel and bladder charity, has updated advice on its website to enable early years practitioners to work together with families.

The guidance includes a free Potty Training Package that can be downloaded here. The pack contains:

  • Potty training policy
  • Potty training flowchart for practitioners
  • Early years healthy bladder and bowel assessment
  • Potty training record
  • Factsheet on withholding – ‘Children who will only poo in a napy and other toilet avoiders’.
  • Bristol stool chart.

The charity also has a new online course ‘Supporting Children’s Toilet Training’ especially designed for early years professionals. The next half day course is scheduled for 16 June.

It looks at the problems that can arise during toilet training and gives best practice advice on how to manage or overcome common childhood continence problems such as constipation, day time wetting and behavioural issues, including fear of the toilet.

The course can be upgraded to include a further half day session focusing on supporting children with additional needs with successful toileting.
