Encourage children to study their own facial features and introduce them to a range of artists' representations of faces.

To look closely at and identify features of faces

To respond to an artist's work and make marks to record their observations and represent their own ideas

Adult:child ratio: 1:4.

Resources

Mirrors (freestanding ones will enable children to use both hands when drawing their self-portraits, unbreakable tiles can be attached with Blu-tack to the sides of boxes or furniture units); mark-making tools, such as pencil crayons, dry pastels and fine liner pens; clipboards; paper; a range of reproductions of artists' portraits and self-portraits, such as those by Picasso, Hockney (faces collection), Reynolds, Van Gogh (self-portrait). These are available in art magazines or poster packs. Art web sites also include printable images. You can also use examples of original portraits by adults and other children.
