The 3.5 metre-tall puppet named Amal is travelling over 8,000km, embodying the message ‘Don’t forget about us’.
Behind The Walk – a travelling international art festival in support of refugees - is Good Chance, a charity that works with artists from around the world to bring communities together and tell stories of hope and humanity. The puppet of Amal has been created by the Handspring Puppet Company, the creative team behind War Horse.
Its aim is to remind the world of the millions of displaced vulnerable children, many of whom have been separated from their families, who need access to education and support to rebuild their lives.
Amal started her journey in July and is walking from the from the Syria-Turkey border to the UK.
So far, she has visited Turkey, Italy, Greece and France. She will arrive in the UK on 19 October when she will be visiting Folkestone Harbour Arm. Amal will then journey to Dover and Canterbury before arriving in London on 22 October where she will visit landmarks including – St Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal Opera House and the V&A Museum where she will celebrate her 10th birthday. After London, Amal will visit Oxford, Coventry, Birmingham, Sheffield, Barnsley and Manchester (See map below for more details).
Good Chance and Choose Love – a store that sells supplies and services for refugees - have set up the Amal Fund to raise money to help refugee children build a more hopeful future.
