Free daycare for students

ALondon nursery group has teamed up with a local college to provide free daycare for children while their parents receive on-the-job nursery training. Newham College of Further Education has joined forces with Foundations for Learning, an independent nursery chain, to establish the Early Years Nursery Academy, offering free childcare places for students at the college and providing a practical environment in which to teach and train new nursery staff. It has 90 childcare places for students and the local community.

It has 90 childcare places for students and the local community.

Geoff Crook, nurseries division director at Newham College, said that 'finding quality childcare was one of the main barriers to learning' in the area and that 'without the provision of free, high-quality childcare, many parents would be unable to study'.

The concept is similar to that of the neighbouring East London Childcare Institute, launched in April 2004, which aims to create around 1,000 qualified childcare workers over the next five years by running childcare courses from introductory to degree level. It also has a 57-place neighbourhood nursery on the site.
