Early years vocational qualification map revised

Careers & Training
The much-criticised occupational map showing vocational qualifications for the route into Education and Childcare has been updated by the Institute for Apprenticeships.

It follows a consultation that closed in January and received just 21 responses.

This is one of 15 maps that sets out the occupations with relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours within a route. They play an important role in identifying occupations for the development of apprenticeship standards and T level qualifications.

The draft map attracted criticism from sector bodies because it did not link the correct qualification with the correct area of work. For example, Level 3, which allows for staff to manage a setting under the EYFS, was aligned with ‘assistant’.

As a result of the consultation on the map, the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) has amended job titles and levels. It now refers to an early years assistant as a Level 2 and has replaced the title Early Years Professional with Early Years Teacher.

The Early Years Assistant (Level 2) standard is awaiting development following a consultation that closed in February.

The Level 3 Early Years Educator standard has been published, but is not yet ready for use.

The Level 5 Early Years Senior Practitioner, which comes under the Early Years Support Practitioner cluster on the map, is also in development, as is the degree-level (Level 6) Early Years Lead Practitioner qualification, which comes under the Early Years Education Support Professional cluster on the map.

However, a linked page on the IFA website giving descriptions of the occupations listed on the map appears only to have been partially updated. Early Years Assistant says, 'Early Years Assistants focus on either nursery or reception classes, and support teachers in learning through play activities and ensuring students are progressing well and looking for early signs of special education needs.'

The description of an Early Years Senior Practitioner is, 'Provide high quality combined early education and childcare. Work in partnership with parents /carers to promote the well-being and happiness of children and babies within the crèche and groups. Deputise for the Early Years Professional in their absence.'
