Busy Bees Childcare nursery reopens after closing due to lack of staff

The country’s largest childcare provider, Busy Bees, has reopened its Plymouth setting after temporarily closing it due to a shortage of qualified staff.

The setting closed last month and parents of pre-school children starting school this term were told they could no longer return due to the nursery operating at a ‘limited capacity’.

It comes after the nursery was rated inadequate by Ofsted in May due to safeguarding concerns. Reports suggest the setting subsequently had its funding axed.

Busy Bees said while the nursery was closed it had put a new centre director in place and ‘all the teams’ received ‘intense training in key areas’.

A phased reopening of the nursery began on Friday 13 August, starting with its Bombo and Buzz rooms. The nursery group said it has ‘plans in place’ to reopen its Foundation room (pre-school) for more children in the ‘near future’.

A spokesperson for Busy Bees said, ‘Following a short period of temporary closure we were delighted to begin a phased ropening of our Plymouth nursery.

‘The temporary closure was a very difficult decision and was due to not having sufficient suitably qualified staff available. Safety is at the heart of all we do and we must be certain that we can look after the children at our nursery.

Although the temporary closure was quite short much was achieved during that time. We now have a new centre director in place and all the teams have had intense training in key areas. We have made further progress against our action plan in reviewing all our protocols and the nursery has had a thorough deep clean.

‘Whilst it is good news that our nursery is now open again we recognise the impact the temporary closure caused for parents and we apologise for that.’
