Resources

* Washing up liquid * food colouring * sugar * glycerine * plastic cups * straws * shallow container * elastic bands

Step by step

* Mix together a quarter of a cup of washing up liquid, half of a cup of water, a few drops of food colouring and 1 teaspoon sugar.

* Alternatively, mix 1 cup of water, 1 teaspoon of glycerine (available in most chemists) and 2 tablespoons of washing up liquid together.

* Pour into a shallow container and use with homemade bubble blowers. Let the bubble solution age for a day or two to make your bubble blowing easier.

* Poke holes in the bottoms of paper or plastic cups. Invite the children to dip the rims of the cups into the bubble solution and blow through the holes at the other end.

* Make 3cm slits on the ends of straws and bend the strips back. Invite the children to dip the bent ends of the straws into the bubble solution and blow through the other ends.

* Secure four to six straws together in a bundle, using elastic bands, for each child. Invite the children to dip one of the ends of the straw bundles into the bubble solution and blow through the other end.

* Have children compare the bubbles made from different blowers.
