Plan activities that will lead to the achievement of the early learning goals for physical development Three-year-olds are usually exclusively motor-active. They have been 'learning through doing' since birth, and practitioners should aim to encourage the continuation of this active learning in the Foundation Stage through offering stimulating and meaningful activities (see box) within a well-planned environment, and with ongoing observation and assessment of children's physical development during play.

They have been 'learning through doing' since birth, and practitioners should aim to encourage the continuation of this active learning in the Foundation Stage through offering stimulating and meaningful activities (see box) within a well-planned environment, and with ongoing observation and assessment of children's physical development during play.

Such an environment will encourage children to become autonomous, independent learners and enable them to develop their physical skills in a meaningful context - and it is not reliant on expensive resources (see page 20).

There are eight early learning goals for physical development, which are divided into five strands:
