The smoking ban is shortly to come into effect in England. While it will only apply to public places, it is hoped that it will encourage smokers to think about the effect their smoking has on others, and to reduce second-hand smoke. By limiting children's exposure to tobacco smoke, parents and carers will reduce the chance of them developing many respiratory health problems. Where will smokers be banned from lighting up?

Where will smokers be banned from lighting up?

The ban will cover virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England. This includes bars, restaurants, offices, and shopping centres.

Public transport and work vehicles used by more than one person will also be covered by the ban. The ban will not cover private homes and people will not be banned from smoking outside.

People will be fined for lighting up, although experience in Scotland and Ireland has shown that most people do co-operate and few people have been fined. In Scotland many bars and restaurants now have outside seating so, weather permitting, there is actually little inconvenience.
