Nursery World Awards 2010: Individuals - Nursery Practitioner of the Year

Careers & Training Provision
WINNER: Sue Rowley, senior early years practitioner, Thomas Boughey Nursery School, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire

Declared 'exceptional' by the judges, Sue always strives for excellence, whether that's for herself or the nursery school. Her headteacher Laraine Jones says that Sue is always at the forefront of any new initiative in the school, for example accreditation for Eco schools and Healthy schools, and she is currently training as a Forest school practitioner. Sue's persistence and determination, including gaining the support of a local park keeper, have led the forest school initiative to have a positive influence on the children's learning and development.

Vulnerable children attending the school have also been greatly helped by Sue researching and developing PSE initiatives. She has created a relaxing 'quiet place' for children, where they can choose to take part in Sue's massage sessions, which support their behavioural and emotional wellbeing. An artist who helped to create the space refused payment because he was so proud to be associated with it.
