Create welcoming nooks for children to unwind in

Soft fabrics and familiar objects are key to creating cosy corners that are irresistible to children at that point in the day when they want to wind down and cuddle up with a key worker.

Cosy areas that contain family photographs, personal treasure boxes and other unique resources boost a child's feeling of belonging, security and developing sense of personal identity. Rather than places for play and activity, they are often a retreat from the hustle and bustle, where children can spend quiet, intimate time.

At Footsteps Day Nursery in Tamworth, manager Kelly Allum says, 'It is important that a nursery has areas that are inviting for children, where they can have their own personal space and be able to bond, and to think and observe. They can occupy these spaces on their own or with others, share their thoughts and have time to reflect.'
