EYP Diary - Moving into the final phase of EYPS

Nikki Fairchild reports on the successes of the last cohort of EYPs and describes how the University of Chichester is gearing up for the introduction of Early Years Teacher
We are moving into the final phase of EYPS training as we look forward to the introduction of Early Years Teacher Status. Those doing EYPS are completing setting visit paperwork and being assessed over July.

We are thrilled that our three UPP deferred candidates met the requirement for EYPS at their recent setting visit. They have been notified of their outcomes and congratulated on their achievement

We currently have four pathways in progress at different stages:-

Graduate Practitioner Pathway

All GPPs have received a visit from one of our assessors to complete their final setting visit. The assessors travelled to nurseries, children centres, childminders and reception classes to scrutinise portfolios, observe practice, take a tour of the setting and interview candidates. I am pleased to announce that all our GPPs were assessed to have met the requirements for EYPS and this was confirmed by a recent moderation event. Notification to candidates has been issued and we wish them well with their future careers.

Undergraduate Practitioner Pathway, Graduate Entry Pathway and Undergraduate Entry Pathway

The end date for the UPP, GEP and UEP pathway is the end of August but candidates are being assessed through July. Some candidate visits have taken place in the last few days and others are due over the next couple of weeks. These assessments represent 12 months of work towards the status and are a chance for candidates to demonstrate their applied knowledge and skills to an independent third party.

The UEPs and GEPs are looking forward to employment possibilities either in placement settings or further afield. Some have found work in different parts of the country. We have an MA in Early Years Advanced Professional Practice on offer from September of this year and all alumni have been encouraged to consider this as their next CPD challenge. Modules on year 1 of the MA include ‘Child Development’, ‘Leadership and Pedagogy’ and ‘Legal and Policy Frameworks’.

The UPPs have been offered a route to top up their ordinary degree, earned as part of EYPS, to a full honour degree. All have elected to do this and are due to return to us in September to complete one further undergraduate module and an independent research project.

Recruitment for September 2013

The last few interviews have been scheduled for the GPP pathway and equivalency tests are proceeding. We have held some science and maths tests to date and have scheduled further science, maths and English papers over the coming month.

The Early Years Teacher Standards have now been released by the National College for Teaching and Leadership and work is being done to ensure the future programmes are updated in anticipation of receiving the agreed final standards.
