The ability to control emotional and physical impulses should be
developed in the early years to help ensure children embrace learning
and grow into self-regulating adults.

Self-regulation in its simplest form refers to the ability to control our impulses. When we self-regulate, we can stop doing something even if we don't want to, and we can start to do something that is required of us even if we'd rather not (see www.toolsofthemind.org).

Have you ever wanted to do something you know you shouldn't - and stopped yourself from doing it? Perhaps you stopped yourself eating a whole packet of biscuits, or didn't spend a month's salary on a fancy gadget?
