Put your best foot forward and measure it, paint it, tickle it and fit it with comfortable shoes. Sheila Ebbutt suggests a range of activities.

A focus on feet opens up a wide range of learning opportunities for children that span the early years curriculum. Feet are sensitive to touch and texture, so children love to dip them in water, dabble them in paint or squelch in mud.

A focus on feet also opens up opportunities for children to:

- consider the appearance and purpose of feet and compare them to their hands

- count their fingers and toes

- look at socks and shoes, compare sizes and shapes, think about pairs and explore patterns and treads. Do you know what the different parts of the shoe are called? Is there a number on or in your shoe? What is it there for? What does it tell us? Which is your right foot and which is your left foot?
